No Evidence of ‘gray’ Dust from Composite Quasar Spectra
نویسنده
چکیده
Two recent studies based on composite reddened quasar spectra have indicated the presence of ‘gray’ dust in quasar environments. This gray dust has a relatively flat extinction law in the UV, consistent with the theoretical expectation of a lack of small dust grains close to a quasar. In contrast, individual reddened quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey tend to have steep extinction laws in the UV, similar to that in the SMC. We analyze the method used in determining extinction laws from composite quasar spectra in order to resolve this discrepancy. We show that quasars reddened by SMC-type dust that are present in quasar samples have a negative correlation between EB−V and redshift, due to selection effects. The fact that the highest redshift quasars (which contribute to the UV part of a composite spectrum) are less extincted leads to shallower extinction in the UV. We construct a composite quasar spectrum from a simulated sample of quasars reddened by SMC-type dust and show that the extinction curve derived from the composite does not recover the intrinsic extinction law. We conclude there is no evidence of gray dust in quasar environments. Subject headings: dust, extinction – galaxies: active

متن کاملA ug 1 99 7 Detection of the 2175 Å dust feature in Mg II absorption systems
The broad absorption bump at 2175 Å due to dust, which is ubiquitous in the Galaxy and is seen in the Magellanic clouds, is also seen in a composite spectrum of Mg II absorbers. The composite absorber spectrum is obtained by taking the geometric mean of 92 quasar spectra after aligning them in the restframe of 96 absorbers. By aligning the spectra according to absorber redshifts we reinforce th...
متن کاملAGN polarization modeling with STOKES
We introduce a new, publicly available Monte Carlo radiative transfer code, Stokes, which has been developed to model polarization induced by scattering off free electrons and dust grains. It can be used in a wide range of astrophysical applications. Here, we apply it to model the polarization produced by the equatorial obscuring and scattering tori assumed to exist in active galactic nuclei (A...

With a redshift of z = 5.5 and an optical blue magnitude MB ∼ −24.2 mag (∼ 4.5×10 12 L⊙), RDJ030117+002025 is the most distant optically faint (MB > −26 mag) quasar known. MAMBO continuum observations at λ = 1.2 mm (185μm rest-frame) showed that this quasar has a farIR luminosity comparable to its optical luminosity. We present near-infrared Jand K-band photometry obtained with NIRC on the Keck...
متن کاملThe Transparency of Galaxy Clusters
If galaxy clusters contain intracluster dust, the spectra of galaxies lying behind clusters should show attenuation by dust absorption. We compare the optical (3500 7200 Å) spectra of 60,267 luminous, early-type galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to search for the signatures of intracluster dust in z ∼0.05 clusters. We select massive, quiescent (i.e., non-star-forming) galaxies...
